JOSH MEIER:
Soundless Sunless

JANUARY 8 - FEBRUARY 12, 2023

Opening: Sunday, January 8, 6-8pm

Soloway Gallery and curator Orli Swergold are pleased to present Soundless Sunless, a solo exhibition of Josh Meier.

Soundless Sunless is an exhibition of paintings by Josh Meier that presents a cast of images ensnared in seemingly disparate histories, landscapes, abstractions, and texts. From twinned leaf insects eating each other to the lonely surface of Mars, each painting condenses scale and time into intimately surreal dislocations.

Many of the works combine low-relief plaster castings of fingers and teeth with the painted and printed image. Their surfaces physically push outward and the effect is of simultaneous material fact and optical illusion. Other paintings depict small interior scenes framed by patterned pillowcases; the turgid terrain of dream life.

Every painting in the exhibition, like facets of a diamond or the process of efflorescence, attempts to reconcile the concluding sentence to the Borges essay The Wall and the Books: “Music, states of happiness, mythology, faces belabored by time, certain twilights and certain places try to tell us something, or have said something we should not have missed, or are about to say something; this imminence of a revelation which does not occur.”
